The computer is a useful machine. It is one of the most important inventions. The oldest kind of computer is the abacus, used in China many centuries ago, but the first large and modern computer was invented in 1946. The computer could work out maths problems quite fast.
Now the computers are getting smaller and smaller, and computing faster and faster. Many scientists agree that computers can now do many things, but they cannot do everything. Who knows what the computers tomorrow will be like? Will computers bring good things or bad things to people? The scientists today have to decide how to use the computers tomorrow.

Before the devices that are now referred to as mobile phones existed, there were some precursors. The development of mobile telephony began in 1918 with tests of wireless telephony on military trains between Berlin - Zossen. In 1924 public trials started with telephone connection on trains between Berlin - Hamburg. In 1925 Zugtelephonie A.G.is founded to supply train telephony equipment[8] and in 1926 telephone service in trains of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and imperial post on the route between Hamburg and Berlin is approved and used.[8] This phone service was only offered to 1st class travelers, but in 1918,some 5 years after the invention of Meißnerischen tube based transmitters, the German Reichsbahn in Berlin led experiments with telephony via radio.
The first mobile telephone calls were made from automobiles in 1946.The Bell System's - Mobile Telephone Service - inaugural call was made on 17 June of that year in St.Louis,Missouri, followed by Illinois Bell Telephone Company's car radiotelephone service in Chicago on 2 October. The MTS phones were composed of vacuum tubes and relays, and weighed over 80 pounds (36 kg). There were initially only 3 channels for all the users in the metropolitan area, increasing later to 32 channels across 3 bands. This service continued into the 1980s in large portions of North America.Due to the small number of radio frequencies available, the service quickly reached capacity. In 1956,the world’ first partly automatic car phone system,Mobile System A (MTA),was introced in Sweden.
Mobile phones are used for a variety of purposes, including keeping in touch with family members, concting business, and having access to a telephone in the event of an emergency. Some people carry more than one cell phone for different purposes, such as for business and personal use.Multiple SIM cards may also be used to take advantage of the benefits of different calling plans—a particular plan might provide cheaper local calls,long-distance calls, international calls

Latest invention
This latest invention uses a small scanner that plugs into the audio input jack on a mobile device.
It reads information on a credit card when it is swiped. The information is not stored on the device but is encrypted and sent over secure channels to banks.
It basically makes any mobile phone a cash register for accepting card payments.
As a payor, you receive a receipt via email that can be instantly accessed securely online. You can also use a text message to authorize payment in real time.
Retailers can create a payor account for their customers which accelerates the payment process. For example, a cardholder can assign a photo to their card so their photo will appear on the phone for visual identity confirmation. Mobile devices with touch screens will also allow you to sign for goods.

⑨ 谁能用英文介绍一项发明(英文高手进)
Martin Cooper (born in Chicago, Illinois) is considered the father of the mobile phone (as distinct from the car phone). Cooper is the CEO and founder of ArrayComm, a company that works on researching smart antenna technology and improving wireless networks, and was the corporate director of Research and Development for Motorola. He received his degree in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1950 and received his master's degree from the same institution in 1957.
In 1995, Cooper received the Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award for his technological innovations in the communication field. Cooper is also a member of Mensa.
Cooper is considered the inventor of the first portable handset and the first person to make a call on a portable cell phone on April 3, 1973, to the bewilderment of passers-by in a New York City street. That first call, placed to his rival Dr. Joel Engell, Bell Labs' head of research, caused a fundamental technology and communications market shift toward the person and away from the place. It was the incarnation of his vision for personal wireless communications, distinct from cellular car phones. Cooper later revealed that watching Captain Kirk using his communicator on the television show Star Trek inspired him to research the mobile phone.
