可是再也沒有在城市出現過„„從此，這種花就成為只開在黃泉路上的彼岸花，曼珠和沙華每一次輪回轉世時，在黃泉路上聞到彼岸花的香味，就能想起前世的自己，然後發誓不再分開，卻又會再次跌入詛咒的輪回。
還有一個美麗的傳說。。。
相傳以前有兩個人名字分別叫做彼和岸，上天規定他們兩個永不能相見。他們心心相惜，互相傾慕，終於有一天，他們不顧上天的規定，偷偷相見。正所謂心有靈犀一點通，他們見面後，彼發現岸是一個貌美如花的女子，而岸也同樣發現彼是個英俊瀟灑的青年，他們一見如故，心生愛念，便結下了百年之好，決定生生世世永遠廝守在一起。結果是註定的，因為違反天條，這段感情最終被無情的扼殺了。天庭降下懲罰，給他們兩個下了一個狠毒無比的詛咒，既然他們不顧天條要私會，便讓他們變成一株花的花朵和葉子，只是這花奇特非常，有花不見葉，葉生不見花，生生世世，花葉兩相錯。傳說輪回無數後，
有一天佛來到這里，看見地上一株花氣度非凡，妖紅似火，佛便來到它前面仔細觀看，只一看便看出了其中的奧秘。佛既不悲傷，也不憤怒，他突然仰天長笑三聲，伸手把這花從地上給拔了出來。佛把花放在手裡，感慨的說道：「前世你們相念不得相見，無數輪回後，相愛不得廝守，所謂分分合合不過是緣生緣滅，你身上有天庭詛咒，讓你們緣盡卻不散，緣滅卻不分，我不能幫你解開這狠毒的咒語，便帶你去那彼岸，讓你在那花開遍野吧。佛在去彼岸的途中，路過地府里的三途河，
不小心被河水打濕了衣服，而那裡正放著佛帶著的這株紅花，等佛來到彼岸解開衣服包著的花再看時，發現火紅的花朵已經變做純白，佛沉思片刻，大笑雲：大喜不若大悲，銘記不如忘記，是是非非，怎麼能分得掉呢，好花，好花呀。佛將這花種在彼岸，叫它曼陀羅華，又因其在彼岸，叫它彼岸花。 可是佛不知道，他在三途河上，被河水褪色的花把所有的紅色滴在了河水裡，終日哀號不斷，令人聞之哀傷，地藏菩薩神通非常，得知曼陀羅華已生，便來到河邊，拿出一粒種子丟進河裡，不一會，一朵紅艷更勝之前的花朵從水中長出，地藏將它拿到手裡，嘆到：你脫身而去，得大自在，為何要把這無邊的恨意留在本已苦海無邊的地獄里呢？我讓你做個接引使者，指引他們走向輪回，就記住你這一個色彩吧，彼岸已有曼陀羅華，就叫你曼珠沙華吧。從此，天下間就有了兩種完全不同的彼岸花，一個長在彼岸，一個生在三途河邊。生生世世，永遠相忘。
